Oct. 16-18: Bad Weather
The weather was not great as the R/V Knorr left the dock. The ship met 2-meter seas as the team made the near two day trip to their first hydrothermal vent site at Rainbow. We arrived at station on Wednesday evening, October 17, and made preparations for the first dive, which commenced on October 18 at 0930, as the weather calmed down at the site. The dive collected samples from hot hydrothermal vents for major elements including iron, manganese and sulfide using titanium ‘major’ samplers; this was led by Amy Gartman. Microbial mat samples and mussels were collected by Dave Emerson’s lab as in situ electrochemistry data were collected by Dan MacDonald, Trish Hredzak and Mike McGinley. The dive ended on Friday morning at 1000.
